A handcrafted soy wax melt maker wanted to sell online without the website becoming a second inventory to manage — and without selling a jar online that had already left the table at Saturday's market.
Project Overview
Square was already the point of sale at farmers markets. So the design started from a constraint rather than a feature list: Square stays authoritative, and the website is a view onto it — never a second ledger to reconcile.
That ruled out the conventional answers. A standard platform would want to own the catalog and the stock count, leaving two systems to keep in step. Instead we built a storefront that holds no commerce data of its own.
What We Delivered
One inventory, two sales channels, no reconciling
Live Catalog from Square
Products, prices, images and stock all come from Square, with caching so the shop stays fast. Add a product in Square and it appears online; sell one at a market and the count drops.
Stock-Aware Checkout
The cart won't exceed available stock, and quantities are re-validated against live inventory before checkout is created. Carts left open for a week can't carry quantities that no longer exist.
Shipping or Local Pickup
Modelled as distinct Square fulfillments rather than a shipping line item — so pickup orders simply never ask for a shipping address.
The Challenge
Selling the same handmade stock in two places at once. Every conventional store platform wants to own the inventory, which for a maker already running Square at markets means two counts, two places to update, and eventually an oversold order.
Our Solution
Make Square the single source of truth and give the website no inventory of its own. Sign-in runs through Square itself, so there's no extra password to manage — and a one-time recovery key handles the thing that actually happens eventually: lost access.
